What is the CAHMI?

The Mission of the CAHMI

The mission of the Child and Adolescent Health Measurement Initiative (CAHMI) is to ensure that children, youth and families are at the center of quality measurement and improvement efforts in order to advance a high quality, consumer-centered health care system.

What does the CAHMI do?

The Child and Adolescent Health Measurement Initiative is a nonprofit organization focused on measuring and guiding improvements in healthcare based on input from the consumer (the patient).

We try, wherever possible, to use surveys that consumers (patients or parents) fill out so that health care providers and health systems can hear from their patients and improve the care they give based on this feedback. From developing surveys, to helping health systems use the surveys, to developing websites that share the results from national surveys, the CAHMI is focused on how the information gathered from consumers can be used to make changes and improvements in health care.

An example of a recent CAHMI project took place with pediatricians at Kaiser Permanente in Portland, Oregon. For this project, we administered the Promoting Healthy Development Survey (the same survey that is on this website) to parents whose children receive care from Kaiser Permanente. We then helped the pediatricians understand the survey findings and how they can improve the care they provide based on the feedback they got from their patients.

Who funds the CAHMI?

The CAHMI receives funding from private funding agencies, the federal government and through contracts with health systems and researchers. Currently, the CAHMI is primarily funded by the Commonwealth Fund (www.cmwf.org) and the Federal Maternal and Child Health Bureau (http://mchb.hrsa.gov/).

Where is the CAHMI located?

The CAHMI is based out of Oregon Health and Science University in the Department of Pediatrics in Portland, OR. Originally housed at FACCT - Foundation for Accountability, the CAHMI was established in 1998. You can learn more about the CAHMI by visiting our website at www.cahmi.org.
